The LB Bulletin - October 2023

It’s time for another LB Bulletin, the newsletter for Limit Break Comics. The team have found themselves busy in every aspect of their lives, but that doesn’t stop the comic wheel turning.

If you need a reminder of who we are:

  • Paul Carroll - writer, EP3 participant
  • Gareth Luby - artist, cover designs and comic interiors
  • Gary Moloney - writer, law-talking guy
  • Seamus Kavanagh - writer, runs panels on making comics

In this issue of the LB Bulletin, we’re going to look at our last events for the year, some fun new work, and we’re back with our comics tip and recommended reading! Let’s dive right in!

Upcoming Events

Coming up in the next few weeks are Gaelcon, Ballinasloe Comic Con and Thought Bubble. Paul does not take breaks, and signed up for all three. Gaelcon will be purely a tabling experience, whereas Ballinasloe (organised by the lovely folks of the library) will have Paul joining some pros on stage for a panel discussion.

And then… Thought Bubble.

Last year, we launched Down Below. This year, we’re bringing Fractured Realms. (Thanks to our amazing printer who will no doubt be the saviour of many people tabling that weekend.)

Thought Bubble is a special event every year, and always leaves us wanting for more. We’re lucky to have a small team at the table, allowing us to explore and mingle a bit more than most people can when they’re at the event. And we’ll be beside the delightful Colin Craker for the weekend. What more could we ask for?

The year will be wrapped up when we land at DCAF in December. We’ll talk about that in due course, when the energy exists to consider being that close to Christmas.

Project News!

Fractured Realms

The book is (almost) on its way to the printers!

After six solid months of work from the moment of pitch responses to the file formatting, we’re thrilled to say that our third myth anthology is just about complete. Fulfilment will begin as soon as they land at Paul’s house in Dublin.

We’re excited to finally have the book out in the world. Expect pictures from the launch weekend, and a few sneak peeks of the inside of the book as we approach Thought Bubble.

On The Count’s Trail

While not strictly a Limit Break project, Paul’s involved in this one as part of his role with IrishComics.ie.

This weekend, for the Bram Stoker Festival, On The Count’s Trail will be making its debut in Stokerland. The comic was written in six parts by Paul Carroll and Aaron Fever, with tremendous art by Hugh Madden, Katherine Foyle, James Killian, Mari Rolin, and Eoin Barclay.

Readers can follow along by scanning the QR codes on the posters at Stokerland, following Quiney and Lucy Harker on a journey across Europe to save their parents from Count Dracula! Mwahahaha–!

Intro to Comics Tip

We’ve been publishing comics since July 2018, and now find ourselves in the position of offering advice to new creators at conventions. Each month, one of the team will be giving an insight into the lessons they’ve learned along the way. Last month, Seamus Kavanagh shared some advice on making progress. This month, Gareth Luby joins us with an illustrated piece of advice on page flow. Save it down and keep it handy, folks!

Art Drop

Our collective is made up of writers and artists. Each month, we want to show you some of the artwork that the team are working on to give you an insight into the people behind the comics.

For the month that’s in it, Paul has his own take on Dracula!

What We’re Reading

Every month, we’ll give you an insight into what we’re reading in the great big world of comics. This month, Seamus tells us about The Sacrificers, from Image Comics.

There’s only three issues on the stands at the moment but I’ve really been enjoying Image Comics new series The Sacrificers. It’s a Rick Remender series with Max Fiumara on Illustration, Dave McCaig on Colours and Rus Wooton on Letters.

A look at the cover of #1 can allow one to guess what the story is about; Families on a fantastical world must give up a child at some point; it’s a price to pay for what we can only guess at the moment is peace and stability. After the first three issues, it’s very clearly that the team are in no hurry to reveal the full the reasons behind the inner workings of this world (this is also outright said by the Writer in a letter at the end of #1). Instead, we’re getting slow paced tales focusing on key areas and practices of this world.

#1 gives insight into how one Family mentally prepared for their sacrifice but still alludes to the hidden pain of the seemingly unavoidable act. I particularly liked the approach #2 took to how it presented the sacrifices from other societies of this world and the mindset of that approach.

While the story is hook enough to keep me engaged, I do like the characters introduced so far. I used “fantastical” to describe the world as it’s made up of all sorts of imaginative anthropomorphic creatures. There’s a rich visual style to these characters and it’s exciting to turn the page and get only glimpses of characters you very much want to learn more about, knowing that it’ll likely be a long wait to do so.

#4 hits comics stands on 1st November and it’ll likely be the end of January before there’s a trade available but I think this is definitely something I’ll be enjoying on a monthly release basis.

Next month, we'll be recovering from Thought Bubble, and will have an update on fulfilment of Fractured Realms. Exciting!

Until next time!
